In terms of a recommendation, Ableton asks for minimum specs of 8GB. That said, the reviews have been almost unanimous that an M1/M2 is a massive step forward and it is literally night & day from an Intel machine. The fact is that 16GB of RAM is still 16GB of RAM, but an Apple machine might use it in a more streamlined way beacuse Apple controls how it all works together. In terms of RAM, again from reading around, Apple is using its experience in phones & tablets to drive performance via effecient use of resources (rather than performance outright.) As a result, you may hear that the new M1 chips use RAM in a “completely different” way.
The GPU is less important for music than these factors, so you can often spec the slower processor of the 2/3 that Apple will offer you on the pricing page. Onboard storage is also important as this is (typically) the fastest way for the machine to access data. In terms of what’s most important - I believe that sample based workflows use more RAM whereas virtual instruments use the CPU. So that Intel machine has about 3 years left, and given the price, you could pick up a new or refurbished M1/M2 machine for not much more (a Pro is a fair bit more). Apple describes a product as “vintage” after 5-7 years, and obsolete after 7 years. My iMac of 2013 stopped being eligible for OSX updates and support bar essential security updates.įirstly, the main consideration when looking at an M1 vs Intel decision is support. I’ve been reading up on this ahead of a move to M1/M2 in the next 12 months or so.
